How No-Props-in-View FPV Frame Geometry Works

“No props in view” is primarily a geometry problem. The camera position, lens field of view, camera tilt, motor locations and arm layout have to work together so the prop discs stay outside the recorded image. Simply pushing the camera forward is not the only solution — and often not the best one.

The camera sees a cone, not a straight line

A wide FPV lens captures a large horizontal and vertical field. A prop can be physically below the camera and still appear at the bottom corners of the image. As camera tilt changes, that viewing cone rotates, which is why prop visibility can change between a low-angle cruising setup and an aggressive high-angle setup.

Motor placement is the big lever

Moving the front motors laterally or changing the relationship between front and rear motor positions can pull the prop discs away from the camera’s view. Squash-X and other non-square layouts can be used to create that clearance while keeping the center of mass and flight behavior under control.

Why not just stretch the frame?

Longer is not automatically better. Excess wheelbase adds structure and can change rotational inertia. The useful design is the shortest practical geometry that creates the desired camera clearance, component space and prop separation without making the quad unnecessarily large.

Camera protection still matters

A camera moved too far forward may get the props out of view but become the first thing to hit an object. A good no-props-in-view layout keeps the lens protected while maintaining the intended view.

MOTUS 4SX

The Funkolius MOTUS 4SX is a 4-inch squash-X performance frame designed around no-props-in-view camera geometry. It uses the motor layout and camera relationship as part of the frame design rather than treating prop visibility as something to crop out later.

Bottom line

No-props-in-view design is a balance between camera field of view, camera tilt, motor placement, wheelbase, component packaging and protection. If one of those is solved by sacrificing the others, the frame has not really solved the problem.
